TYPEOFFELTING

STEPONE
Dyeing:Followingthedirectionsfor
theacidwooldye,dyethebatts.
Onlyuse50 gramsmaximumat
a time,in an oldelectricfrypan
withwaterto cover,makingsure
therearedifferentintensitiesof
thecoloursby usinga different
quantity either1 tablespoonor 1
teaspoon or a differentlengthof
timein thedyebath,or by putting
someof thebatt/topin first,
addingtheotherpiecesat different
times.Ensurethatthedyebathis
onlyjustsimmering,andaddthe
battsor topsbeforeturningthe
heaton;gentlyprodonlywhilstthe
fibreis in thedyebath.


STEPTWO
Allowthebattsto coolandrinse
thoroughlyin waterthesame
temperatureas thebattsso that
no feltingtakesplacein thisstage.
Hangcarefullyandallowto dry.


STEPTHREE
Wetfeltingfor thebag:Placing
oldtowelsto covera table.Lay
outbubblewrapplacingbubble
sidefacingupwardsat least1m
wideand2mlong.Withthefirst
50 gramsof dyedbatts,pullout
finepiecesandlay outa rectangle
approximately70 80cmwideand
100cmlong.Makethisa verythin
layerwithall of thefibresgoingin
thesamedirectionwidthwise.


STEPFOUR
Withthesecond50 gramsof dyed
batts,pulloutfinepiecesandlay
overthefirstlayer,makinga thin


layerwithall of thefibresgoingin
thesamedirectionlengthwise.

STEPFIVE
Withthethird50 gramsof dyed
batts,repeatthefirstlayer
directions.Addsmallpiecesof
ribbonlaidon topof thefelt(the
feltwillholdtheribbonin);after
theprefeltingstage,theribbon
mayneedto be sewnto thefelt,
leavingthethreadendson,if
desired.

STEPSIX
Spraythoroughlywiththehot
soapywater,coverwithanother
layerof bubblewrap(ensurethe
bubblesidefacesdownwards);
startrolling/rubbingthebubble
wrapfirmly,makingsureyouwork
theedgesthoroughly,andcovering
thewholelengthof fibre.Checkthe
feltingby liftingup thebubblewrap
andpinchingbetweenthefingers.
Whenthewholepieceis sticking
togetherandit canbe liftedup in
onepieceholdingtogether,put
in thewashingmachineon a hot
wash.Drythefinishedfeltpiece.

STEPSEVEN
Sewmorepiecesof ribbon
ontotheoutsideof thefeltand
embellishwithembroideryand/or
usingbeadsor anythingthattakes
yourcreativefancy.

STEPEIGHT
Knittedfeltingfor thestrap:
Using4.5mmneedles,caston 20
stitches.
Knit20 rows.
Changeto 7mmneedles,knit 20
rows.
Changeto 12mmneedlesandknit
untilneartheendof thesecond

ballof yarn.
Changeto 7mmneedles,knit
approximately20 rows.
Finishwithat least10 rowsusing
4.5mmneedles
Designnote:Thedifferentneedle
sizesensuresthattheendsthat
willbe attachedto thebagare
quitefirmandstrong.
Castoff loosely.Sewin theends
of yarn.Usinga largesafetypin,
weavetheribbonlengthwise
throughthecentreof thestrap.
Leavingat least2cmoverhangof
ribbonat eachend,safetypinthe
endsof theribbonto theendsof
theknittedstrap.

STEPNINE
Placein a hotwashcyclein the
washingmachine;dry.Pullany
looseribbonthroughtheholesin
thefelt.Trimtheendsof theribbon
to thelengthof thefelt,andsew
ribbonsecurelyto eachendof the
edgeof thefelt.Usingthesewing
needle,securetheribbonto the
holesevery10cm(approximately)
alongthelengthof thestrap.
Embellishstrapwithembroideryor
beadsif desired.

FINISHING
STEPONE
Layingoutthefeltwrongsideup,
decidewheretheoverlapand
fastenerwillbe placed;markwith
chalk makingan envelopeshape.
Cutandtrimthesideedgesof the
feltalongthelengthwheretheside
seamswillbe, andanyotheredges
if desired.

STEPTWO
Usingtheweavingneedle,turn
thefoldedfeltso thatwrongside
is facingoutandsewup bothof
thesideseamssecurely.Turnso
thattheoutsideof thefelt(the
decoratedside)is facingoutwards.
Usingembroiderythreadand
blanketstitchor similarsewalong
theoutsideof thesideseams.

STEPTHREE
Placelargebuttonwherethe
satchelfasteningis desired,sew
firmlyin place.Cuta holeto fit the
buttonon theflapof thesatchel,
blanketstitchusingembroidery
threadaroundbuttonhole.Place
oneedgeof thestrapalongone
of thetopinsideedgesso thatthe
sideseamlinesup withthecentre
of thestrap.Usinganyleftover
yarnandtheweavingneedle,sew
thestrapsecurelyto thebag.
Placethetwosmallerbuttonson
eithersideof thesideseamon the
topinsideedgeon theopposite
sideof thesatchelwiththestrap
alreadyattached,sewon securely.
Measurethedesiredlengthof the
strap,cuttwosmallholescarefully
in thestrapto matchtheplacingof
thebuttonsat thedesiredlength
of thestrap.Embroidertheedges
of thebuttonholeswithblanket
stitch.Buttontheendof thestrap
to thebag.Finishby trimming
anyedgesandanyfurther
embellishment.
