Above: Mrs Pan, aged 78, grows this garden. The climbers in the background are Chinese yams,
which grow tubers up to 200 cm long underground. The little seeds hanging from the vine are
also eaten; both seeds and tubers taste like potato. The middle row (staked) is of capsicums, then
a row of Chinese spinach in front. Garlic chives are to the left. At back left on the fence are luffa
vines. Their fruits can be eaten when young, and when they’re old and dry, and the skin washed
off, they can scrub pots or the body. The buckets contain fertiliser from soya bean curd waste.
