A soaring space boasting a beamed ceiling and a set of statuesque windows surrounded
by stone, the great room presents the most robust interior architecture in the house. To
make the room’s size feel less imposing, designer Phoebe Howard visually lowered the
height of the walls—and made the space feel cozy—by applying painted wood paneling
halfway up three walls, a fi nish which sets a modern tone and establishes the room’s
soft color palette. Large-scale furniture, such as a pair of Formations Olympia cabinets
fl anking the fi replace, an oversize Gregorious Pineo cocktail table and a custom-de-
signed ottoman, stand up to the room’s height without appearing bulky thanks to their
bleached tones. And in an effort to please both sexes, Howard balanced the subtly mas-
culine plaid drapery with a pair of sofas covered in her favorite fl oral chintz, Cowtan &
