came onthe sc reen. I’ll not
write what my hus band said.
We pressed the bu tton on
the machine and alady said it’s
£25. When we queried this, she
said she could seewe hadn’t
crossed before.This time only,
she would charge us £1.40.
When we got on the boat we
Googled the bridge and it said
if your vehicl e is above 2.39m
high you areclassed as an HGV.
We had anexcellent week
on the island staying at
Whitefields Forest Touring
Park. This campsite had
excellent f acilities and large
pitches, plus it was quiet and
had a good bus service.
Naturally, we cameback a
different way on ly to be faced
by a diversi on as the M27was
closed for bridge building.

EDhe tolls arecalculated
by vehicl e height at the front
axle in metres. Cl ass 3 is
between 1.33m and 2.39m and
costs £1.40.If the height is
greater, the to ll due is £25. Red

avoid Itche n Bridge it is be st

west on the M27 to junction
7 (A344 to City & Waterf ront)
or junction 5 (A355 to City &
Waterf ront). h ese alte rnatives

minutes to your journey time.”

Where to park
in Ouistreham
We have a ca utionary tale for
motorhomers travelling back
to the UKfrom Ouistre ham,
Caen’s ferry port. A large
number of economic migrants
have gravita ted to Ouistre ham,
and congregate in the ar ea of
the municipal car park at Plac e
du Général de Gaulle.
Our Bessacarr E540fell
foul of one when we were in
a restaurant opposite the car
park. There were no police
present. Having spotted a
migrant in the vehicl e’s vicinity,
I returnedto the motorhome
and foundthe man juststarting
to climb in the nearside
habitation window, having
forced it open.
Nothing was taken, but
we had toreportthe incident
to the gendarmerie (over a n
hour) so we had paperwork
to support the insurance
claim(we’re still waiting for
identification, price and supply
details andit won’t be che ap).
Our ad vice is, if you wish
to have a last meal ata local
restaurant before checking
in atOuistreham andthe
gendarmerie aren’t around,it’s
best to take your motorhome
to the Gare Maritime, andwalk
back as the re’s more visible
secur ity at the port.
