he sign on the door says FTG
Construction; it’s down in the
harbour area of Stockholm,
Sweden, right across from
the big ferries to Riga and
St Petersburg. If you knock on
the door, a wiry fellow with an
intense gleam in his eyes will open
it, and if you ask him what FTG
stands for, he will give you the
answer. “It stands for ‘Fuck the
government’! Just like any other
self-employed guy, I’ve had a few
beefs with the tax authorities...”
Meet Torgan Duncansby.
Inside the workshop are a
dozen bikes in various stages of
completion. A Yamaha XS1100
converted from shaft to chain
drive that will become another café
racer, a Ducati Monster that will
get the same style as Evel Knievel’s
XR750 racer, a ’65 Panhead
bobber, a typical Softail chopper,
and so on. Torgil isn’t picky about
makes and models, even though
his last three personal rides have
been Yamaha V-Max customs—
most recently an extreme thing
with lots of carbon fibre.
This bike came about because
Dan Arne heard rumours about
this Torgil guy who could help
him with his Yamaha SR500
project, as he explains: “Me and
Dan quickly agreed on what
