Bars 9–10 This is a melodic quote of an-
other bebop standard, “Wail” [Bud Powell,
1952, Blue Note]. Jazz improvisors often quote
other melodies during an improvised solo.
Bar 18 The groupings of three eighth-
notes shift the rhythmic feeling. This hap-
pens again in bar 22.
Bars 24–26 The pickup notes on beat
four in each measure create counterpoint to
the melodic phrases on beats one through
three in bars 25–26.
Bar 29 The note D is the 3rd of Bb 7 ; the
