SCALE AUTO TAILGATE SPECIAL
Another excellent F-150 model kit was Revell’s 2000
F-Series Harley-Davidson pickup. Revell revised its F-150
Flareside kit to incorporate key Harley elements, such as the
grille, wheels and tires, lowered suspension, interior seating,
and exhaust system. Also included was arguably the best 1/25
scale Harley bike model ever: a 2000 FXDX Dyna Super Glide
Sport. The trailer replicated the one at the Ford stand at that
year’s Chicago Auto Show. Because of licensing costs, I doubt
this kit will be reissued; grab one if you see it!
Meng’s 1/24th scale F-350 Super Duty Crew
Cab was issued in 2014 and replicates the 2008-2010
F-350 Super Duty with the 6.4L Power Stroke diesel
and a single rear-wheel setup. This kit was
extravagantly packaged and presented, but its
acceptance may have been hindered by a
comparatively high price and a lack of brand
recognition (at least among American model-car
builders). Kit experts predicted a follow-up dually
version, but it hasn’t happened as of this printing.
Any mention of F-Series kits would
be incomplete without mentioning the
Bigfoot monster-truck phenomenon.
AMT-Ertl’s original Bigfoot kit (bottom
right) was a bestseller, prompting a
modified follow-up kit (top center) based
on the original tooling, but with 1987-91
F-Series styling. The detailed third kit came
from an all-new tool (bottom center) and
used the truck’s 1992-96 design. The
Destroyer II was based on the Bigfoot kit
shown directly above it. Monogram
monster-truck kits used the bodies from
their 1980 F-Series molds.
