This week, Channel 4’s new
comedy-drama – an examination
of the storm-tossed, hurly-burly of
modern life and that daily pursuit
of an always out-of-reach sense of
connection – began rather nicely.
Elsewhere, with the help of
some chunky catching-up, W’s
baby-delivering service returned
impressively and gave its rivals a
run for their money in the pursuit
of young audiences. Meanwhile,
as regular as clockwork, BBC2’s
dragons returned to connect their
money with a spot of profit.

C4: THIS WAY UP
C4’s comedy-drama This Way Up
launched with 1.3 million/8% at
10pm on 8 August after 552,000
recorded and watched, and
another 39,000 watched via
non-TV devices.
This Way Up’s launch was
the channel’s second-best
10pm comedy on television
this year, ahead of Year Of The
Rabbit’s 10 June opener (1.2
million/8%; plus 32,000 via
non-TV devices) and GameFace’s
best on 31 July (700,000/5%),
though the best so far is
Catastrophe’s opener on a chilly
8 January (1.4 million/8%; plus
73,000 via non-TV devices).
This Way Up drew 494,000/12%
ABC1 women, again the second
best of the broadcaster’s 10pm
comedies behind Catastrophe’s
opener (540,000/11%). The
comedy-drama was well ahead
of Year Of The Rabbit’s best on
24 June (241,000/6%) and Game-
Face’s highest on Wednesday 7
August (225,000/6%).

W: EMMA WILLIS

  • DELIVERING BABIES
W’s second series of Emma Willis:
    Delivering Babies launched on
Monday 5 August at 10pm with
    462,000/3% after 361,000
    recorded and watched. Another
    6,000 watched via non-TV devices.
This is W’s best show of 2019 so
    far, ahead of MasterChef Australia
    on 8 August (354,000/2%, with
    another 2,000 watching via

non-TV devices). Delivering Babies
overtook W’s previous best-rating
commissioned title, PR drama
Flack, which launched on 21
February to 247,000/2%, with
another 5,000 viewing on non-TV
devices. The maternity-ward doc
series achieved 132,000/12% for
women 16-34, more than E4’s
First Dates (57,000/6%) opposite
and ITV2’s American Dad! double
bill at 10pm (96,000/9%) and
10.30pm (95,000/10%).

BBC2: DRAGONS’ DEN
Dragons’ Den returned for its 17th
series on BBC2 on Sunday 11
August with 3 million/16% at 8pm
after 439,000 recorded and
watched. This was effectively par
with the 16th series opener (2.9
million/14%) on Sunday 12 August

  1. Another 95,000 watched
    2019’s launch on non-TV devices
to make 3.1 million in total. The
    new series launch drew 1.7
    million/19% ABC1 adults, 31,000
and more than two share points
    better than last year’s opener.
