Bad Times at ★★★★
the El Royale
From Friday 30th August
(8.00pm-10.25pm) Sky Cinema Premiere
Straddling the California-Nevada
border in Lake Tahoe is the hotel El
Royale. It’s 1969 and Jeff Bridges,
Jon Hamm, Cynthia Erivo and
Dakota Johnson are the guests
checking in and Lewis Pullman is
the creepy only employee. There’s
also room for Chris Hemsworth
and all manner of fiendishly
devious twists and turns
as writer-director Drew
Goddard’s stylish, clever
tale unfolds. (2018; Cert 15).

Firth) suffers from a debilitating

Carter) takes him to eccentric Aussie

All three stars are word
perfect in this sensational

and touching. (2010; Cert 12).

ABBAsolutely fabulous film of the

Blade Runner 2049
5
On demand Netflix
A not-to-be-missed sequel to
Ridley Scott’s 1982 masterpiece
Blade Runner from director Denis
Villeneuve. It’s 30 years after the
original, LA’s just as bleak and Ryan
Gosling is the Blade Runner ‘retiring’
rogue replicants. But then
a puzzling discovery sends
him on an earth-shattering
quest... The film looks
stunning and the characters
are compelling. (2017; Cert 15).

Hacksaw Ridge ★★★★
9.00pm-11.35pm Channel 5
Director Mel Gibson doesn’t stint on
the brutality of warfare in this stirring
account of conscientious objector
Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield)
who, during World War Two,
single-handedly saved 75 men after
charging into battle without
a gun. Garfield is movingly
gutsy and Vince Vaughn,
Teresa Palmer and Hugo
Weaving offer excellent
support. (2016; Cert 15).

The Muppets ★★★★
1.10pm-2.45pm BBC2
A really funny family film in which
Muppets fan Jason Segel (who
also co-wrote the script) travels to
Hollywood with his chirpy girlfriend
(Amy Adams) and shy brother (Peter
Linz) to find out what’s happened to
his heroes. Learning Chris
Cooper’s tycoon wants to
tear down the Muppets
Studios, Segel sets about
rallying the old gang to
save the day. (2011; Cert U).

Wrongly jailed for killing his wife and
her lover, 1940s banker Tim Robbins
is sent to Maine’s Shawshank

An affecting, captivating
adaptation of a Stephen
King story, with a brilliant
pay-off. (1994; Cert 15).

when Chris Evans’ Captain America
