Barnaby and Winter investigate strange

deaths involving a local rugby team

D

CI John Barnaby and DS
Jamie Winter are embroiled
in the darker side of sport in
a new episode of ITV’s Midsomer
Murders this week, as death stalks
a high-flying rugby team.
Businessman and ex-rugby
player Mark Adler (Nicholas Goh),
owner of the Causton Lions rugby
team, is found frozen to death in
a cryotherapy chamber used by
the players to help with injuries.

Enemies
The dead man feared that his wife,
chocolate-shop owner Samantha
(EastEnders’ Tamzin Outhwaite),
was cheating on him, while star
player Danny Wickham
(Trust Me’s Richard Rankin)
is another suspect. Only
troubled gay team coach
Bill Viner (Don Gilet)
appears to have any loyalty
to best friend Mark.
‘Bill was a top player but
his career came to an end
after a horrific tackle,’ says
former Holby City star Don.
‘That led to depression and

hitting the bottle until Mark gave
him the post of coach.’
When another victim is drowned
in Samantha’s shop kitchen, the
case takes a fresh turn as Barnaby
(Neil Dudgeon) and Winter (Nick
Hendrix) try to connect the deaths...
Don says working on such a
much-loved show has turned him
into a huge Midsomer fan. ‘I had so
much fun – it’s one of my top guilty
pleasures now. I loved working
with Nick and Neil, and I was even
involved in a stunt explosion!’
Another scene reveals Neil’s
own surprising
talent for rugby,
in a shot where
Barnaby kicks a
ball over the posts.
‘I’ve hardly
kicked a rugby
ball in my life,
but it sailed over
marvellously,’ Neil
says. ‘Everyone
cheered!’ Q
Troubled...
