In This IssueHe began posting raw voice notes, captured with the voice-memo appon his phone, on Twitter. Then he re-corded âSaved,â a melancholy âonethat got awayâ ballad inspired by thegirlfriend he had left behind in NewYork, in a garage studio in El Paso.Like âLocation,â the song gestures tolove and dating and the digital detri-tus of an expired relationship. (âButIâll keep your number saved/âCause Ihope one day youâll get the sense to callme,â Khalid sings.) âI would hear himsinging in the bathroomâvery, very, very loudly,â Wolfe tells me, âbut I hadno idea he was writing songs, that hehad that capability, until he let me hearâSaved.ââ Wolfe was loored. âI had alazy son, you hear me? He was lazy.âThe summer after graduation,Khalid tossed his clothes into a plas-tic tub and drove out to L.A. to inishrecording what would become his de-but album, American Teen, released inMarch 2017. Perhaps unsurprising for``````someone with such a peripatetic child-hood, heâs been on tour pretty muchconstantly since.Touring has helped Khalid shedsome anxiety about performing. Thetrick, for him, is to look at every mem-ber of the audience and to try to makea connectionâthe perennial new-kidstance. A now-famous clip shows himjumping ofstage while performing inManchester, England, to hug a tearfullittle girl who was singing along to hislyrics.âI just had to show her apprecia-tion,â he says. But Khalid admits that heâs a âcom-pletely diferent personâ when heâs notin front of a crowd. âI like people tolook at me as a regular guy whoâs justinvolved in a super-rare job that kicksass.â And ofstage, he is beginning toput down roots. Recently he boughta four-bedroom house in L.A., anditâs clear that part of the appeal is thatitâs a home for his guests as well. Atany given time, he says, he has about``````three friendsâfrom El Paso or evenGermanyâstaying with him; morecrash on the sofas. He has installeda video projector and a sound sys-tem to entertain them with. âI donâtknow how to dance,â he claims. âButIâm learning.â During an upcomingbreak, heâs planned a trip to Dubai,Tokyo, and Greece for his friends andbackup dancers. When we last spoke,heâd recently added a nine-week-oldpuppyâa cocker spanielâdachshundmix named Mauiâto the household.âSheâs in tour-training mode rightnow,â he tells me. Sheâs âgonna be alittle monster.âThe house itself heâs filled with re-minders of El Pasoâa mirror markedwith the cityâs area codeâas well assome things that underline how far heâscome: clothing by Helmut Lang, Guc-ci, Comme des Garçons, Balenciaga,Cobra S.C., and Adaptation. Almostevery shoe in his tour closet, he tells me,is made by Nike, except for Balenciaga
