s you can probably tell from the opening shot this
Hawke isn’t your standard GCS, not by a long way.
Its more brutal muscular lines are actually more in
keeping with the modern age of supercar baiting
Morgans, a far cry from the early Plus Four
inspired kit that engineer Drew Selvey purchased many years
ago. What makes the feat most impressive, however, is that as it sits
today, this in your face, full fat, sports car is just as striking as it was
when it first hit the road nearly 20 years ago. But it wasn’t always
going to be this way.
While kit car fan Drew had always liked the GCS kit, he wasn’t
nearly as keen as his wife Julia. If you read the build feature in
the last issue you’ll know that he came very close to building an
Excalibur Crusader instead. So close, in fact, that he ordered that kit
instead of the Hawke but, following a disastrous relationship with
the manufacturer that ended with the company going to the wall,
that build just wasn’t meant to be.
It was at this juncture that Drew had to make the difficult decision
between selling his Cortina donor parts that he spent so long
building up into a chassis that he could no longer use, or find a way
of repurposing as much as he could from that car into a new kit.
Thankfully, he chose the latter option, going back to GCS with the
intention of turning its traditional ’50s styled roadster into the multi-
award winning custom kit car that it is today.
