    Because it is a swing-out
    towbar, there is no place for a
    drop plate, so you can’t adjust
    the height of the ball itself if
    your caravan’s coupler is higher
    or lower. The ball is 41,5 cm


above the ground – completely
within the legal limit of between
35 cm and 46,5 cm for a caravan,
though off-road trailers tend to
be higher off the ground.
This means some off-road
caravans and trailers are likely to
be slightly nose-down behind
the X5. (The test vehicle had air
suspension, and the height of
the towbar was taken on the

suspension’s middle setting.)
With the air suspension, you
can set the X5’s bodywork to sit
higher or lower off the road, but
for towing, the choice is limited.
If you drop the suspension to its
lowest setting, the ball is 37 cm
above the road surface and at its
highest 48 cm.
