GROW A

POMEGRANATE

f beauty &

With their soft semi-eve
leaves and showy fl owe ,
pomegranates could well
be grown just for their
good looks, and the fruit
regarded as an edible bonus.
Pomegranates are adaptable to
a wide range of climates, although
there’s less chance of the fruit splitting
when they’re grown in areas with long, dry
summers. Established pomegranate plants are
incredibly tough, require minimal fertilising and little
pruning. Buy a named variety if fruit quality is important,
but if you just want a pretty shrub, ask a friend for some
cuttings.Dwarfpomegranatesmakeattractivepotplants.

Visiting open gardens in spring is a great way to gather
ideas and inspiration or simply enjoy the fruits of others’
endeavours. Each issue of ABC Gardening Australia
magazine includes a calendar of garden openings and
events (see page 14). My Open Garden’s useful website
(myopengarden.com.au) lists openings around Australia.
In some states, there are organisations that arrange
regular openings, especially in spring. Always respect
the garden you’re visiting – often, it’s a family’s private
domain – and don’t pick plants or walk through garden
beds. Ask for permission before taking photos, too.
