thathaveanominousappearancewhen
usedin botanicaldescriptions,but
gardenersneednotbeundulyworried
orperplexedbythem.Centrifugal,as
appliedtoplants,meansthatthefirst
flowerstoopenarethoseat the top or
centreof aninflorescence.
Centripetalappliesto thoseplantsin
whichthebloomsona spikeorheadof
flowersopenfirstfrombeloworonthe
outerside.Zonalpelargoniumsare
examplesof thecentrifugaltypewhile
antirrhinumsareof thecentripetaltype,
ie,theflowersopenfromthebase
upwards.Indeed,themajorityof
gardenflowerswhichhavespicate
inflorescences belong to this category.
