NEW UNESCO HERITAGE SITE
AZERBAIJAN adds another feather to its cap as Sheki Khan’s summer palace, built in 1762
byHuseyn Khan, was recently granted the status of a UNESCO World Heritage site. A five-
hour drive from the country’s capital, Baku, the palace’s older northern part is set amid the
Caucasus mountains, while the southern part stretches out into the river valley. Sheki Khan’s
palace boasts 5,000 wooden and glass details of ‘Shebeke’ – the pride of Azerbaijani crafts-
men – in an idyllic city that was a significant link between the East and the West on the Great
Silk Route. Being featured on the UNESCO World Heritage List of cultural sites is a recogni-
tion of Azerbaijan’s distinctive culture and history. The Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Land-
scape in Qobustan and the Maiden Tower in Baku are also heritage sites (www.azerbaijan.
travel/en/home). And, to get you to these and the country’s other draws there – gastronomic
and cultural, AZERBAIJAN AIRLINES welcomes the first ever direct flight linking New Delhi
to the coastal capital city of Baku. Every Tuesday and Friday, flights take off from INDIRA
GANDHI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (DEL) for HEYDAR ALIYEV INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT,
and are set to double in number by October 2019 (www.azal.az/en/).
