Get your daily steps
in(or not) in Lisbon
Perhaps to atone for its famously sugary pastries,
the Portuguese capital offers ample opportunities for a leg workout.
With one day spent in the Alfama district’s hillside warren of streets,
and another tracing the sounds of fado music in the Bairro Alto
(‘High Quarter’), your calves and thighs will be feeling the burn
a while afterwards. There’s a lazy alternative that nevertheless sets
theheartbeatingfaster:boardtheveteranTram 28 for a rattling
rideupanddownbothhillsandthroughnarrowstreets
(www.visitlisboa.com; tram fares from ` 230).

Walk the
Camino, in Africa
The Cape Camino runs
for 100 miles through one of South Africa’s
defining landscapes. From Cape Town’s
streets, the trail passes through winelands
and seaside suburbs to reach the Cape
of Good Hope. With a spiritual nod
to its Spanish namesake, the walk’s
stages include stops at churches,
synagogues, kramats (Islamic shrines)
and indigenous sites such as Peers Cave,
where a Khoe-San guide often performs
a ceremony (www.capecamino.co.za;
Hike passport ` 1,94 0 ).

Be a coppersmith
for a day in
Sarajevo
Sarajevo has played an outsize role
in history, and has a compelling East-meets-
West feel to it. Get a literal overview
of the Bosnian capital from its cable car,
reopened last year for the first time since
the conflict of the early 1990s. Many urban
explorations here centre on recent history;
for a different perspective, take a half-
day class in the centuries-old art
of coppersmithing, with the option
of decorating your own coffee pot (www.
sarajevofunkytours.com; classes from ` 3,10 0 ).

Discover
Indigenous Sydney
Only a handful of buildings
in Sydney have stood for longer than
two centuries, but the Aboriginal culture
of the region goes back more than 30,000
years. There’s much to see if you know
where to look, from modern artworks in
galleries such as The Artery, to performances
of Bangarra Dance Theatre at Sydney
Opera House. You can learn more on
a Sydney Harbour cultural cruise and island
guided walk with the community-run
group Tribal Warrior (www.sydney.com;
