’RING BURNING
Love the magazine and have been
reading it for 32 years.
I recently heard that Skoda is
claiming its Kodiaq vRS is the quickest
seven-seater around the Nurburgring
Nordschleife.
I understand the fascination with
sports car manufacturers and the
Nurburgring, and bragging about their
lap times (guys know about bragging
when something’s better than their
opposition), but, c’mon, bragging about
a quick seven-seater?
I bet they didn’t have kids in the third
row during the lap. If they did, they
would have been cleaning up projectile
vomit from inside the car for a hell of a

lot longer than the lap lasted...
I’m sure BMW will take one of their
new hippos on wheels, the X7, around
the track to beat Skoda’s record.
What next? Will a Jeep Grand
Carnival minivan set a lap time waiting
for the new Toyota Tarago to try and
beat it? Will a Winnebago attempt a
lap at the ’Ring? Or how about Thailand
getting into the action and producing
a souped-up Tuk Tuk for a lap of the
Green Hell.
Actually, I must admit the Winnebago
does sound like fun.
Nektis Parissis, via Facebook
We just want to see the quickest lap
of the ’Ring in reverse. Is that too much
to ask?

BASIC INSTINCTS
I see on your website that you recently
tested a base 718 Porsche Cayman
and got times of 4.38sec to 100km/h
and the quarter mile in 12.65sec at
177.86km/h. And that Porsche claims
0-100km/h of 4.7sec for this car,
and 0-160km/h of 10.8sec. You saw
0-160km/h in 10.18sec.
These are impressive times
considering the relatively quaint power
and torque. But I guess the average
Porsche Cayman owner won’t be
waving their laminated dyno sheet
at cars while stuck at the lights (yes,
this actually happened to me last
week by the driver of a supercharged
Commodore).

COCK AND BULL
I do miss reading Paul Cockburn’s
articles, and especially his column. It was
one of those pages tucked away down
the back of the magazine that made me
realise that the interior of my car is much
more important than what it looks like
on the outside.
I also wonder what he would
have to say about this godawful trend
of having the infotainment screen
looking like someone forgot to include
it when designing the dash and just
mounted an iPad atop the thing to
remedy their oversight.
Greg Broderick, via Facebook
We are whipping up a cheeseboard as
we speak to lure Cockburn back. It has
to be one helluva cheeseboard...

GRIP VERSUS FUN
I can have a lot of fun with 215-wide
tyres with a good brand of tyre. Grip
and therefore g-force is good, but in
my opinion being able to break the
limit of traction safely (like, not at
stupid speeds) is probably more fun
than having as much grip as possible.
Not that I do it very often, as don’t
want to break the car, which is why
I haven’t entered a motorsport event
for years now.
