The LRDG

T

amiya’s LRDG Chevy truck, also
released as a ‘Command Car’
so as to avoid brand licensing,
has long been a popular kit.
Even for its age, it is nicely detailed, and
the only major failure is the rubber tyres
that have a reputation of cracking. With the
multiple re-issues of the kit, there has been a
small resurgence of new aftermarket sets to
‘dress-up’ this classic! I was recently tasked
with doing just this, but with an already
assembled and painted kit, this was
a great exercise in restoring an
older model and adding some
igures. To get started, the irst
step is to remove the old paint,
and I like using a industrial
strength degreaser found in
the automotive section of
our local DIY store. There are
several brands, but ‘Purple
Power’ works well for me. I
disassembled the model as
much as possible, removing
the cracked rubber wheels,
and then soaked it in a tub
overnight. Use heavy rubber
gloves to remove the parts, and
the paint will wash right of or with
a gentle scrub from an old toothbrush.
Once stripped, the model was
reassembled, and I continued as with
any other build.
Resicast makes a very nice and
simple resin update for the LRDG.
