It is always exciting when a new Dragon
kit is received for review, and this one is no
exception. Here Dragon have boxed together
two releases as a 2-in 1-kit, giving you plenty
of plastic for your money. Ferdinand
Porsche met the request for a
heavy tank in 1941 and went
on to develop the VK 4501 (P)
prototype. The tank introduced
several innovative solutions for
the time but was not anywhere
near reliable enough. During
testing, the tank highlighted
some serious weaknesses in
the driving system and also the
engine. The German Army preferred the
Henschel prototype, the VK 4501 (H), which
became the development base for the famous
Tiger I. However, from the irst production
run of the Tiger (P), Porsche released the
already completed chassis which went on to
become the Ferdinand and then Elefant tank
destroyers. One completed version remained
and went on to serve on the Eastern Front as
a command tank, and three further chassis
became the Bergepanzer variant. The model
consists of twenty-six very comprehensive
grey sprues in all, one large etched
fret, clear parts, very nice one-
piece DS tracks, lengths of chain,
wire and cable and decals for
three vehicles. There is also
some nice Zimmerit detailing
where required. Many parts are
included from previous boxings
and are labelled ‘not for use’ so
you will certainly end up with plenty
of bits to end up in the spares box! The
inishing options are for the one-of command
tank, Pz.Jg.Abt.653, Eastern Front 1944 and
two Bergepanzer variants one each serving
on the Eastern and Italian fronts. Everything
would appear to be up to Dragons usual high
standard, and I look forward to seeing how this
very impressive release goes together, now I
just need to decide which version to build!
