RWD MK1 GOLF
While the Euro scene continues to grow here, it isn’t often we see extensive builds
come out of the woodworks. Then we spotted Andre Atkins’ Toyota BEAMS–
powered VW Golf Mk1 sitting in the parking area of Mad Mike’s Summer Bash
in 2018. The stark white German was hard to miss, slammed out over a set of
gold bling rollers and stripped back to the bare essentials. The BEAMS wasn’t
plumbed up or wired, but showed a solid indication of the direction Andre was
headed with the build. So, it was to our surprise that, when walking through the
doors at the 4&Rotary Nationals back in January, we saw that the Toyota heart
was gone and in its place was a two-litre FSI four-banger facing front to back.
We were intrigued then, and even more so when Andre touched base to let us
know that the entire floor had been cut out of the chassis in order for him to
construct a scratch-built unit that will support the impending rear-wheel drive
conversion! The Golf’s currently off having a roll cage professionally installed
before Andre puts in a few late nights to finish the chassis construction — keep
an eye out for future updates on this one.
