Q: Do I need anti-radiation
underwear?
A: For those who don’t know, there’s
underwear that claims to protect your
parts from low-grade electromagnetic
f ield radiation emitted by the
smartphone in your pocket, in order to
lower the risk of testicular cancer and
infertility. The short answer is you don’t
need them. So far, there’s no absolute,
clear scientif ic evidence linking this
low-grade magnetic radiation to those
issues. If you’re concerned about
infertility, anti-radiation underwear is
not the solution. The testis functions
better in a slightly cooler environment,
so the real enemy is heat. The phone in
your pocket may raise the groin
temperature. This underwear could
make men think it’s OK to keep a phone
there. A f ix? Put your wallet in your
front pocket and the phone in the back.

15 MINUTES TO FEWER INJURIES

You’re just back from a sweaty
summer run and making a
beeline for a cold shower.
Researchers are suggesting
some recovery first. The study,
published in the Journal of
Sports Science & Medicine,
found that 15 minutes of foam

rolling twice a week significantly
increased flexibility after two
months—which, along with
strength training, plays a role
in injury prevention. To get the
max benefits, don’t press too
hard, and tick off a checklist of
body parts, spending a minute
and a half on each: hamstrings,
calves, quads, IT band, and
glutes. Boring task, yes. But do
it anyway.

STOP BRUSHING WITH CHARCOAL

Toothpaste manufacturers are now
offering formulas with activated
charcoal, promising that its porous
particles suck up stains and tartar.
But research in the British Dental
Journal suggests that charcoal may
be harmful by depleting teeth of
flouride, the mineral that helps
prevent tooth decay progression.
Use an abrasive ingredient like
charcoal too often and enamel can
erode, says Nicole Khalife, a dentist
in New York City. That can lead to
hypersensitivity and cavaties. Plus,
long-term use may turn your teeth
gray. Save charcoal for the grill.
