GO FOR A MINDFUL RUN

ONE THING FITNESS

If you only do one thing

T

his isn’t just any old run

  • it could be the secret to
    reducing stress levels and
    boosting cognitive performance.
    Fitness and wellbeing coach Natasha
    Wood explains more...

MORE THAN JUST A JOG
While running is good for your
physical health, it can also do wonders
for your mental health. ‘Running and
mindfulness really go hand in hand –
when you’re running down that open
road there’s really no one else but you
and your mind so it’s a great opportunity
to actively focus your thoughts,’ says
Natasha. ‘It lowers stress levels, helps
you feel happier, improves performance
mentally, reduces pain and decreases
anxiety and depression symptoms.’

67%
...of Brits say they are
more stressed now than
they were five years
ago, according to
mindfulness app
Headspace.

Start by setting an intention
in the first few minutes of your
run, then completely let it go. You
may have the intention to get
a promotion at work, or to stop
comparing yourself to others.

2

Become aware of both your
breathing and your physical
movement. Focus your breath in
a way that supports your body
and overall run technique.

3

As you get into a deep state
of awareness, just become the
observer of your thoughts, what
stories play out in the mind – don’t

try and change anything, just run
with it and become aware.

4

It’s with this awareness that
over time a deep sense of
calm sets in – this is one of the
huge benefits of mindful running.
As well as becoming clearer in your
thoughts and actions, you’re able
to process things more effectively
and efficiently. You will feel happier,
calmer and more grounded while
improving your overall performance
both in and out of work, as well
as stamina and positivity.
