The music icon, 73, has donated
more than $10 million and thousands
of instruments to schools
I was 11 years old when I learned how to read music, and that
was the beginning of my career. These days a lot of schools have
had to cut funding for the arts, so they’re running out of instruments
or the ones they have are broken. This is why I formed the Manilow Music Project.
When I used to go on the road, I would do an instrument drive in every city. I don’t
tour much anymore, so my husband, Garry, and I decided to give $100,000 worth
of new instruments and uniforms to a school this year. I speak to teachers and
principals about kids in music classes: Their grades go up,
they learn how to interact with other students—even if
they’re not going to be the next Mariah Carey, it changes
their lives. I’m taking this career that I’ve been lucky enough
to have and giving back—
and that really feels good.
