COMEDYInspired by a true story, Marathon is about
hard-partying 27-year-old Brittany (22 Jump Street’s
Jillian Bell). After receiving a less-than-flattering
bill of health from her doctor, she goes on a heartfelt,
humorous journey of self-improvement and—
you guessed it—runs a marathon. Bell shines in the
role and is backed up by a first-rate supporting cast.

DRAMAThe fifth and final season makes one
remember songwriter Lorenz Hart’s pointed lyrics:
“When love congeals/ It soon reveals/ The faint
aroma/ Of performing seals.” Just a lousy time all
around. Exes Noah and Helen (the excellent
Dominic West and Maura Tierney) seem to have
had any sparks of real happiness stamped out of
their lives. Meanwhile, in a wrap-up twist, the show
introduces a story line from the future: Anna
Paquin plays the adult daughter of Ruth Wilson’s
now-deceased Alison. (Showtime, Aug. 25, 9 p.m.)
