WHAT action would you take on each of the above
hands after your RHO opens 1♥?
WE now all know it’s correct to make a take-out
double, either when you want to compete, but don’t
know which suit to bid, or when your hand is too
strong to make a simple overcall. As we’ll see next
week when dealing with responses to the doubles,
it’s crucial partner can rely on you having the neces-
sary honour or playing strength.
Hand (a) is too strong to overcall 1♠, so you must
double first, and plan to show your spades on the
next round. Hand (b) would be perfect for a jump
overcall of 2♠, for those who play such bids as
strong. For those pairs, who play jump overcalls as
weak or intermediate, a double is again necessary.
(c), you double first, and then bid clubs to show
your great strength. Many players will also double
on (d) in order to indicate the spade holding; if
partner responds in clubs, they will then bid dia-
monds. This is quite a dangerous practice, because
opponents have a nasty habit of barrage bidding in
their suit and, when your partner has a club suit,
you will have problems over a 4♣, or 5♣ response. It
is wiser to bid 2♦ on this hand.
