Langer: Aussies won’t
return Archer’s fire
Groggy Smith ruled
out of the third Test
PAUL NEWMAN
Cricket Correspondent
THE ASHES
AUSTRALIA coach Justin
Langer insists his bowlers
will not be motivated by
revenge after talisman Steve
Smith was ruled out of the
third Ashes Test.
Smith was told yesterday he
must sit out the Headingley match
because of delayed concussion. He
was hit on the neck by a 92mph
bouncer from Jofra Archer during
a ferocious spell of short
bowling in the drawn
second Test at Lord’s
on Saturday.
England’s Ben
Stokes said after the
match that Australia’s
batsmen should expect
more of the same for
the rest of the series.
But Langer says his
pace attack will be
focused on taking
an unassailable 2-0
series lead, rather
than bowling short
on a pitch which
is not expected to offer great
assistance to pacemen.
‘We’re not here to see how many
bruises we can give,’ said Langer.
‘You can’t get out with a bruise on
your arm. We’ll pick a team
we think can win this Test
on a wicket we believe
will be quite slow.
‘Jofra has brought a
different dimension to
the game. We saw
how quick he
bowled and his
economy rate was
incredible. It was
unbelievable, skil-
ful bowling. That’s
Test cricket, that’s
what we love
about it.’
Rest days:
Smith will
miss the third
Test and is
consoled by
Langer

SANCHO’S BUMPER DEAL
JADON SANCHO has sealed

pay deal at Borussia
Dortmund.
The England forward, 19, has
been rewarded with an
improved long-term contract
that sees his salary soar to
just under £10million a year.
It was offered to him after he
turned down interest from
Manchester United and Paris
Saint-Germain to stay with
last season’s Bundesliga
runners-up.
Last week, Sancho was rated
the fifth most valuable player
on the planet, at £145million,
