Vintage Rock – September-October 2019

(lu) #1

Second band was Shindig, nicely turned
out in black suits and red ties. Among the
perhaps predictable choice of numbers was
Matt Monro’s My Kind Of Girl, beefed up and
turned into a stroller. Other choices included
Ghost Riders In The Sky, Cliff Richard’s Move
It and Let’s Jump the Broomstick.

SO, DID THEY have Teddy Boys in
Australia in the 50s? If they didn’t, they do
now, in the person of The Lincolns, drape-
suited and booted, bequiffed as required. A
thundering start with Carl Perkins’ Boppin’
The Blues, into Rick Nelson’s Travelling Man,
the standard Let’s Fall In Love, followed,
naturally by Gene Vincent’s Lotta Lovin’.
Buck Ram’s The Great Pretender was
taken at an up-tempo pace, with good
backing harmonies, then it was Please
Don’t Touch for the second time within an
hour and, er, another take on I Ain’t Givin’
Up Nothin’.
Corrupted, from France, with the
emphasis on the ‘Ted’ in their name,
closed out the fi rst night with a 100mph
rush through standards including Peanuts
Wilson’s Cast Iron Arm.

Highlights on Friday included, also
from France, The Spunyboys, with their
gravity-defying bass fi ddle matched only by
the similarly gravity-defying pompadour
sported by its slapper, Remi.
Memphis Lee And The Creepers, hailing
from South Wales, made the wise decision
to invite Kentish lad Dylan Kirk to guest on
piano, enhancing what would otherwise
be a nine out of 10 performance into a 10
out of 10. Material included Charlie Rich’s
Break Up, Carl Perkins’ Put Your Cat Clothes
On! and Sonny Fisher’s Rockin’ Daddy. The
overplayed Shake Your Hips, while well-
performed, should be left with Slim Harpo.
Porky, fronting Hot Rockin’, was pelted
with bras from female audience members
at the end of his set, but to his credit as a
gentleman, he handed them back later!

His set included Johnny Horton’s
I’m Coming Home, a rockabilly take on
Summertime Blues with amended lyrics
(“I can’t help you, son, you’re too young to
drink”), and Jimmy Skinner’s How Low Can
You Feel, no doubt via Ray Campi.
Sandy Ford’s Flying Saucers, The Fireballs
UK, Danny Reno’s Roy Orbison tribute, The
Rhythm Aces, Lucas And The Dynamos,
The Bobcats, The Kingcats, Italy’s Lucky
Lucianos with Jacko Buddin and Bernie
Woods And The Forest Fires were among
many other acts who sent happy punters
home on Monday believing they’d heard so
much music in four days that it must have
been a week.
