Sweepstakes is offered by Meredith
Corporation and may be promoted by any
of Meredith’s publications in various

school, when organized activities
ramp up and he’s spending a full day
interacting with peers. You may
wonder if he’s happy, but he can be perfectly
content being alone or watching from
the side. Pushing him to be more outgoing
may only increase his social anxiety.
Instead, try to gently encourage him to
go outside of his comfort zone.

Focus on close friendships.
You might worry that having only
one friend isn’t good for your child,
but it’s best to just let her be. In fact,
introverts benefit from having a single
close friend. A study in Development
and Psychopathology found that having
just one friend protected withdrawn
kids this age from experiencing increased
levels of anxiety and depression.

Help him get involved.
If your child is reluctant to try new things,
signing him up for a team or a group
activity in the hope of making him more
outgoing likely won’t work. But if

he’s genuinely interested in something,
look for ways to help him break in.
Having alone time with the coach or the
instructor is a good way to ease a child
into a group activity. Ask to meet with
the coach before practices start, or
consider booking a private lesson with
the dance teacher before a group class.
