A SMOOTH SAIL

Lips tend to get dry in acute weather

conditions, especially in dehydration-

inducing spaces like air-conditioned rooms, and of course, when you

don’t moisturise enough. Start by exfoliating your lips once a week.

This helps get rid of all the dryness, roughness, dead skin, and slight

chaps that you may be prone to. Use a mild face wash or a lip scrub

to do this. For those brides-to-be looking for a home remedy: four

drops of glycerin with a pinch of brown sugar crystals is just perfect.

After this buing session, it is important that you moisturise your lips

with a layer of vaseline or an intense balm that suits you best, at all

times. This will restore the smoothness and keep your pout supple

and lustrous all through the day and at the back-to-back events.

THE BIG GAME

The one vital question all those with thin lips or brides who simply

want their lips to look voluptuous ask is how does one make lips

look fuller? Elton J Fernandez, oicial makeup artist, Maybelline

New York, gives us the simplest techniques, “Use a lip liner in a

shade or two deeper than the colour of your lipstick that follows,

and draw a new outline along the outer edges of your natural lip

line. Then you can always grade your lips using two tones of the

same colour, using the lighter tone on the middle of the mouth,

along with a lipstick.” If you’re wearing a bold lip colour, pat on a

champagne highlighter on your Cupids’ bow for an accentuated

look. Gloss has a tendency to relect light and add fullness. For those

with a very ine pout, inish your lipstick with a layer of matching

gloss—this will lock the colour and

intensify it further. If you are looking

for a sexy pucker, just dab a small

amount of lip gloss in the centre of

your lips, especially concentrating on

the middle of your lower lip and purse.

THE SUBTLE CODE

Even out your lips with foundation

and concealer that match your skin tone. Start by applying foundation

around your lips and especially in both the corners. This will mute

the lip line. Now, apply the concealer to the top edge of your upper

lip and the bottom edge of your lower lip—approximately a millimetre

away from the lip. Use a lippencil that is a shade or two darker... a

palette of browns is recommended as it’s closer to skin. This is to

draw an outline under your original lip shape. Fill the lips with a lip

colour using a lip brush (you need the precision when you are

applying a lot of colour). Ensure you use this colour over the line

you drew and blend it well. Avoid using bright gloss, shiny lipsticks

or pop colours—as all the attention will be drawn to your mouth.

KEEP IT NATURAL

“I just follow the bride’s natural lip line,” says Fernandez on giving

the perfect shape to a bride’s lip on her wedding day. In fact, the idea

is to stay as natural and close to your original features as possible, and

enhance them. For instance, with round lips you could deine the

Cupids’ bow with a lip liner and then ill in the lips with a crème

lip colour. Blend the lip liner outline to avoid it looking dated.

TEXTURES AND HUES

Matt lips are best for brides, no worrying about touch-ups. Pinks

and roses are great for summers. Mix a little nude during the day,

and blend in some scarlet for the evening pout.
