THE REFERENCE

CF: That’s constant, so it’s not strange to
me anymore. Everyone wears that outfi t if
you go to Comic-Con. What’s strange is when
they have it tattooed on them.
KM: Have you ever been to Comic-Con?
CF: There’s nothing stranger. It gets really strange when
they put the outfi ts on babies, as though the mother
swallowed a little Princess Leia outfi t. The new thing is
making them for dogs.
LM: I’ve seen that so many times lately – little dogs dressed
as Yoda.
CF: My mother [Debbie Reynolds] collected costumes. She had
these amazing iconic pieces, like the Marilyn Monroe white dress
[from The Seven Year Itch] and the ruby slippers from The Wizard of
Oz. I should have worn that Marilyn dress while there was still time.
LM: You should have tried to sneak it into Star Wars.
CF: Yes, it should have been the white dress.
KM: Do you have a favourite Star Wars character?
CF: Probably Yoda, but I also love Jabba.
LM: All the characters could be real, even though someone spent
hours thinking them up.
CF: It’s frightening to imagine George [Lucas] thinking about Boba
Fett for hours.
LM: I have a stupid question. How did you come to land the role
of Princess Leia?
CF: I was 19. Just. I had been in another movie, Shampoo, when
I was 17. I had an agent, who was actually my mother’s agent.
Everyone was getting seen for Star Wars. They were casting it and
Carrie at the same time; I remember Sissy Spacek. They did it
because George didn’t like to talk and [Carrie director] Brian
De Palma did. We auditioned a bunch of times with that funny
space talk, and I got it.
KM: How has it changed your life?
CF: I think that I’m Princess Leia, and she is me and we’re
together, and she wouldn’t be me without me, but I would
be her without her.
LM: It’s been great talking with you. We’d love to
invite you to our show sometime.
CF: Cool. I want to see a dress with Leia on it.
LM: It’s only going to be half the dress, body
only, because your face needs to be on top.
CF: Right, the young body and the
old head.

LAURA MULLEAVY: Princess Leia has
such iconic costumes. When you’re reading
a script, does your mind immediately leap
to the costumes?
CARRIE FISHER: I’m not a real actor in the sense
of getting in and out of character, but I like to fi nd out
what I’m going to wear in a movie because I might be able
to steal it. Last time I stole something, they found out and
made me pay $500 – for a robe.
KM: Do you have a favourite costume?
CF: I only wore two outfi ts in the fi rst Star Wars and three or four
in the second. Then there was the bikini. I was running around for
a long time with guns and dresses and no underwear. But now
there’s a lot of underwear, so things have changed intergalactically.
KM: How does it feel to have started a whole hologram movement?
CF: There weren’t any holograms back then. You just turned slowly
around and round and round while being fi lmed. It was very dull.
What inspired you to create Star Wars dresses anyway?
LM: Telling stories with clothing is what we do best. The collection
was about growing up, and we thought with this story we have to
have Star Wars in it. I’ve been a fan my entire life.
CF: It’s really cool. I’ve never seen it on clothes, though I don’t
think I could wear something with my face on it.
LM: I guess some people would want to.
CF: Maybe I could just wear the bottom part.
KM: Are there really people who dress like Leia?
