Marcelo Bielsa is refusing to panic and
denies his Leeds United team are suf-
fering from nerves, despite dominating
Nottingham Forest but allowing the
visitors to snatch a draw.
“Leeds are falling apart again” was a
chant used to irritate the Yorkshire
club as they failed to secure promotion
last season and it had a worryingly
early airing again here.
Pablo Hernandez’s cool finish had
put the attacking home side deservedly
in front, but they should have been out
of sight before Lewis Grabban levelled
during a goalmouth scramble, which
produced Forest’s only shot on target.
Grabban was also lucky not to be pe-
nalised for a foul on Leeds captain Liam
Cooper in the build-up to the equaliser.
It was a frustrating outcome for the
Yorkshire club, who were refused at
least two strong penalty claims and saw
striker Patrick Bamford denied by the
woodwork and miss from some clear
openings. Bielsa said: “We created 10
chances, enough to win the game. It’s
not because of the training where this
situation repeats again and again.”
Asked whether defensive nervous-
ness had played a part in losing their
1-0 lead, Bielsa answered: “I don’t think

Freddie Woodman, the England
Under-21 goalkeeper, underlined the
value of attention to detail as his first-
half penalty save denied Derby.
The 22-year-old, who joined Swan-
sea on a season-long loan from New-
castle this month, made a fine save
diving to his left to keep out Martyn
Waghorn’s spot-kick in a match of few
chances, after which Swansea head
coach Steve Cooper revealed the Derby
striker’s stats had given a strong clue as
to where he was likely to aim his kick.
“Waghorn has gone that way four
out of the last five, so fair play to Fred-
die and Martyn [Margetson, the Swan-
sea and England goalkeeper coach] for
doing their analysis,” Cooper said.
“It was not a bad penalty but Freddie
has guessed that Waghorn would back
himself to put it there again in their
first match at home and he’s made a
really good save. It was justice really
for what was a pretty average decision
to give it in the first place.”
It meant that a week that had begun
with a debut victory for new manager
Phillip Cocu ahead of the unveiling of
Wayne Rooney as player-coach-in-
waiting ended on a flat note.
“It was a disappointing result,” Cocu
said. “The penalty was the important
moment in the game because if we get
the goal at that moment we would
probably play better, with a higher
tempo, instead of chasing it and trying
to get into the game.
“Sometimes when you have few
chances like today, and we will have

so. Do you feel the team was scared to
receive the ball?”
When told that it looked like the
pressure had been building, he
explained: “Instead of making passes,
we played long. Defence without attack

  • then this situation grows.”
Despite the frustrating start to the
    home campaign, the former Argentina
head coach feels he can see progress.
“I felt a growing of the team,” insisted
Bielsa, who typically chose not to criti-
cise the officiating. “The team is not
easily losing the ball. We didn’t receive
counter-attacks. The team has come to
control the game. Two corners allowed
them to score one goal. And we needed
10 chances to have the same.”
Leeds had a huge shout for a penalty
in the sixth minute when Adam For-
shaw was impeded after contact from
Alfa Semedo. Bamford then had an
angled shot diverted away by goal-
    keeper Arijanet Muric’s block.
Leeds were arguably lucky to keep 11
men on the field, though, when Kalvin
Phillips only received a booking for a
    heavy, mistimed challenge on Tiago
    Silva in the 28th minute.
Leeds were frustrated in the 52nd
    minute when Bamford’s acrobatic shot
from eight yards sent the ball into the
ground then spinning up on to the bar.
    Hernandez soon broke through
though, controlling on his chest and
then bursting into the penalty area and
calmly steering the ball past the goal-
    keeper.
The circumstances of the goal were
fortunate, as the ball had looped in to
    Hernandez’s path after an attempted
tackle by Forest’s Ben Watson – but
    Leeds’s pressure deserved a goal.

Forest were finally forced to attack,
with captain Michael Dawson power-
ing a header over the bar.
And the visitors stunned their oppo-
nents in the 77th minute by equalising,
as Grabban scrambled the ball across
the line from inside the six-yard box
from Matty Cash’s corner, after Rafa
Mir had miskicked. The ball trickled in,
off the post, agonisingly for Leeds.
It had previously been a frustrating
afternoon for the isolated Grabban but

he was rewarded for his perseverance.
There was more frustration for the
home side late on when Stuart Dallas
went down in the box after seeming to
be clipped by Jack Robinson, but no
penalty was given.
Forest manager Sabri Lamouchi said:
“We played probably the best team in
this league, with the same manager for
more than one year, with more or less
the same players. We have new players,
a new manager, a new way to work.”

many of those games, you have to be
effective at the key moments.”
Cocu did not attach particular sig-
nificance to Cooper’s Waghorn stat.
“Nowadays with all the information
you have from all the games everyone
knows what each penalty-taker does,”
he said. “It was a good save. So, well
done to the keeper. Maybe Waggy
should hit it harder next time.”
The Welsh side had to withstand
pressure, particularly in the second
half, but there were strong displays all
along the back line and in front of it,
where Jay Fulton broke up several
moves. Woodman came to their aid
again after the break, parrying a Flo-
rian Jozefzoon shot and scrambling to
his feet to block Scott Malone.
Swansea spent much of the first half
on the back foot also, although they
had the two best chances, aside from

Derby’s penalty, Mike van der Hoorn
heading wide from a corner and Ber-
sant Celina wasting a good breakaway
attack in stoppage time by blazing over.
On paper, it looked a good result
against last season’s play-off finalists,
especially given their team are in tran-
sition, yet former England Under-17s
coach Cooper, in charge of only his sec-
ond game at a level as high as this, con-
fessed he was disappointed not to have
recorded a second successive win.
“We wanted to win the game, we ex-
pected to win the game and our game
plan gave us opportunities to do that,”
he said. “We thought we could create
chances and we got into positions to do
so, but the final ball let us down.”
