union, the former prime minister
states that England, Scotland, Wales
and Northern Ireland are “devoid of
a unifying purpose” capable of hold-
ing together amid the threat of crash-
ing out of the EU.
Writing in the Observer, he says
unionism is “sleepwalking into obliv-
ion”, fuelled by a “destructive, popu-
list, nationalist ideology” deployed by
Boris Johnson. He joins other senior
Labour fi gures in pleading for urgent
action against a no-deal Brexit.
“If we are to understand why we
are facing not only our most seri-
ous constitutional crisis since the
17th century but at the same time an
unprecedented economic calamity
precipitated by a no-deal exit from
the European Union, we must recog-
nise that nationalism is now driving
British politics,” he writes.
“It follows that only thus – as an
outward-looking, tolerant, fair-
minded and pragmatic people – can
Britain recover its cohesion and com-

Jeffrey Epstein, the wealthy fi nancier
indicted on sex traffi cking cha rges,
has been found dead in a Manhattan
prison after an apparent suicide.
Epstein, 66 , was being held with-
out bail after being arrested on 6 July
on charges relating to alleged sexual
misconduct from 2002 to 2005. He
had pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Last month, Epstein was found
unconscious in his cell with marks
on his neck. New York prison offi cials
had been investigating that incident
as a possible suicide. It was reported
yesterday that he had not been placed
under suicide watch.
According to the New York Post, a
trolley carrying a man who looked
like Epstein was taken from the
Manhattan Correctional Center at
around 7.30am yesterday. A statement
issued by the prison said: “Saturday,
August 10, 2019, at approximately
6.30am, inmate Jeffrey Edward
Epstein was found unresponsive
in his cell ... and subsequently pro-
nounced dead by hospital staff.”
The statement also indicated the
FBI would be investigating the cir-
cumstances of his death.
Last night, victims of Epstein’s
alleged sex trafficking operation
voiced frustration that his apparent
suicide would prevent him from fac-
ing justice. Jennifer Araoz , who had
accused Epstein of raping her when
she was 15, said: “I am angry that
