Pope hails his Heaton education
as Barnes wrecks Ralph’s Saints
ENGLAND goalkeeper Nick
Pope, after his first Premier
League game for 454 days, is
feeling chirpy again and
thankful that former team-
mate Tom Heaton helped him
through the dark times.
Pope has had more ups and
downs than a snakes and
ladders board over the past
two years. In 2017-18 he went
from Burnley reserve to
Gareth Southgate’s World Cup
squad but last season was a
write-off after a shoulder injury
kept him out for six months.
Clarets boss Sean Dyche still
handed him a new contract
over the summer and, with
Heaton having left for Aston
Villa, Pope was given the No 1
jersey ahead of Joe Hart on
Saturday and justified the
decision with a blinding save
from Nathan Redmond at 0-0.
‘It was good to be back, really
special. Even my old man
reminded me it had been 400
days since I’d last played in
the league,’ said Pope. ‘They
were really difficult conditions
but the lads looked after me
and I’m glad I could help out.
‘It was tough going from the
high of a World Cup to being
out for six months. Some days
were easier than others. Some
were really hard, you thought
you were never going to get fit.’
Heaton, who overcame a
similar injury, was vital to
keeping Pope’s spirits up
and ensuring he used
the time off wisely.
‘Having Tom in the
building was really
helpful,’ said Pope.
‘He spoke to me about
different things and went
through the steps of recovery
all the way to the finishing line.
‘I have to prove myself all over
again but I think I can be
better than before.’
On 63 minutes, Ashley Barnes
(below) broke the deadlock
with a fine finish and added
another seven minutes later.
Johann Berg Gudmundsson
gave the scoreline a harsher
look on 75 minutes.
Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl
will hold an inquest into his
team’s surprising collapse.
‘I know that in the Premier
League you can make a
mistake and concede. But it is
about the reaction to that. Our
reaction has to be better,’ said
the Austrian.
