Blending different enamels
together generally creates a
more resilient coating that allows
further light dry or wet sanding
to be carried out, prior to the
colour coat(s) being applied.
Lingering imperfections, such as
dust particles or very minor seam
lines that had gone unnoticed,
can therefore be eliminated. This
done, the identification panels
were masked and sprayed with
Humbrol’s 24 Trainer Yellow.
The pale tan hue was first applied

in a random ‘marbled’ pattern,
which allowed the darker shade
to remain partially visible and
created an instant weathered
appearance. These areas were
masked in turn and the camouflage
shades were added using the same
technique, beginning with the
undersides, which
received a coating
of ACRA19
Grigio Azzuro
Chiaro 1. Flexible
Tamiya UPVC tape

was utilised to
create a hard-edged
demarcation line
between upper and
lower tones, prior
to the dark sand

  • ACRA04 Giallo

Mimentico 4 – being airbrushed.
Everything was set aside for
several days to dry, in preparation
for weathering.
This effect would be created
using my own washing and
blending technique, whereby paint
is manipulated on the model’s
surface by a soft brush dampened
with white spirit, as a figure
painter might use oils, to create an
‘airbrushed-on’ appearance. It was
necessary, therefore, to achieve
this prior to the delicate green

 Small triangle shapes were used as negative templates for masking the white shapes; this
would later be positioned on the opposite and lower wing surfaces and the process repeated.

 An overall basecoat of dark brown enamel was airbrushed as a pre-shade beneath the
yellow-painted identification panels and provided depth to the succeeding shades.

 The underlying dark tones remained visible following the application of an overall
translucent covering of the dark sand shade.

 Additional weathering was added in the form of highlights on the nose and spinner; the
soft enamel was blended directly onto the airbrushed surfaces in a similar fashion to oils.
