T
he M24 Light Tank or
‘Chaffee’, as it was
known in British service,
was developed in
response to the shortcomings
of the M5 Stuart.
The British Army’s experiences
in North Africa, highlighted
the need for a more effective
main gun, as the M5’s 37mm
cannon proved woefully
inadequate against Axis armour.
Consequently, the Chaffee was
developed with a 75mm main
gun, derived from a weapon
designed initially for the North
American B-25 Mitchell. Torsion-
bar suspension aided the vehicle’s
speed and mobility, along with its
relatively low weight of 18 tonnes
(18.29 tons), making it a vast
improvement over its predecessor.
The overall soundness of the
design was reflected in that it
remained in service with several
nations until the early 1970s and
was involved in combat as late as
the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War.
Getting started
The rather large box was in stark
contrast to the model’s diminutive
size. Three large styrene runners
and a variety of tiny photo-etched
(PE) brass items were supplied
- all superbly moulded and
intricately detailed – and easily
equal to a high-quality kit from
The upper and lower hull halves mated without issue, but the intricate torsion bar
suspension required careful assembly (aided by the comprehensive instructions) to
ensure there were no problems later.
