solution the edges of the decals
still exhibited silvering. A more
aggressive product, Mr. Hobby’s
Mr. Mark Setter NEO (www.
albionhobbies.com), which is
formulated for thicker decals as
supplied by several Japanese
manufacturers, resolved this issue
and produced a more satisfactory
‘painted on’ result.


Whitewash
Two coats of ALC-313-
60 Klear Kote Matt were
airbrushed onto the model to
seal all work to date against the
rigours of the next stage and
left to dry overnight. There was
a degree of trepidation involved

with
creating
a suitably
battle-worn
whitewash, as the
process appeared to
be very much hit and
miss. After much online research,
a comprehensive tutorial was
found (see References), which

employed AK Interactive’s AK088
Worn Effects chipping fluid (www.
ak-interactive.com) and AMMO-
MIG’s A.MIG-024 Washable
White Camo (www.migjiminez.
com). The former was sprayed
liberally over the hull and, once
dry to the touch (approximately
15 minutes), the latter was applied
sparingly over the top. After a
further brief drying period, a stiff,
flat brush was dipped in water
and then placed on a kitchen
towel to remove any excess. The

 Although the pre-shade technique seems to have fallen out of favour somewhat, it still
made a useful starting point for the camouflage and any colour modulation.


 After a base layer of XF-62, lighter shades were applied to achieve a level of colour
modulation on the horizontal surfaces and formed subtle tonal variations.
