170June is an uncomfortable
month for stargazing. The
nights are warm but can be
filled with mosquitoes. Also,
the summer solstice is on June
20, resulting in the shortest
night of the year. In Ontario,
we don’t begin observing until
after 9:30 p.m., but the high
latitude of the major cities of
Alberta causes them to wait
until after 10:30 p.m.! And the
sky begins to brighten in the
mornings at 4:30 and 3:30,
respectively.
This month opens with
the gibbous moon in the
constellation Virgo. It will
obscure most of the stars,
except for Spica, which
represents a shaft of wheat.
Venus is passing slightly
north of the sun’s disc on
June 3 and is gone from our sky.
If it weren’t for the brightening
moon, we would see the
celestial structure that will
dominate the sky for the rest
of the year: the Milky Way.
