THE WRITING IS ON THE WALL
Good morning! I love your beautiful magazine—it’s interesting and
informative. Just wondering about the wolf image in “Why We Love
Manitoba” (Spring 2019). Where is it and what is it? I live in Langley,
B.C., but moved here many years ago from Manitoba. I still have a
special place in my heart for Manitoba...and for wolves!

Editor’s note: That wolf mural is stunning, isn’t it? It can even be found
on TripAdvisor as a place to go. The mural is in Thompson, Manitoba, at
Highland Tower. The neat part is the backstory involving Robert Bateman.
The wolf is a photorealist mural painted by Winnipeg muralist Charles
Johnston. The project itself was sponsored by Manitoba Hydro, and the
original wolf sketch (1990) was by Robert Bateman.
TOILING FOR TILLING RIGHTS
Heather Phaneuf’s community garden article (“A Growing Trend”)
in the Spring 2019 issue really caught my attention. Nova Scotia has
serious food-insecurity issues, second to Nunavut. Our branch of
Women’s Institutes of Nova Scotia had hoped to get a community
garden going. Liability issues and landownership/governance
prevented us from going ahead. I want to see how we can make it
possible, and this article provided me with some valuable suggestions.

inspired readers. As they say, it takes a village, and Harrowsmith is always
looking for new like-minded members!
