ABOUT A WHOLE BUNCH OF STUFF

Allegedly, a rooster, a duck
and a sheep were the first
hot-air balloon passengers,
in 1783. The untethered balloon was
set to fly over the heads of Louis
XVI, Marie Antoinette and the
French court in Versailles, France.

While most pig farmers
will protest, pig manure
has been deemed the worst.
According to Colin Johnson,
extension program specialist at
the Iowa Pork Industry Center at
Iowa State University, “There are
over 200 compounds in swine
odour,” including ammonia,
hydrogen sulphide (rotten eggs),
and cadaverine, which smells like
rotting flesh. [Editor’s note: My
grandparents were pig farmers
and I grew up with pig manure
permanently in my olfactory
system. I would still vote chicken
manure as the worst. And don’t
even get me started on the gag-
reflex-inducing mushroom farms!]

On the airwaves, Amherst
Island Radio can brag
about the distinction of
being 100 percent volunteer
run and 100 percent non-profit.
Since 2006, the radio station has
broadcast at 92.1 FM from its milk
house studios in Stella, Ontario,
on Amherst Island. On Tuesday
mornings, tune in to Janet Scott
and Keith Miller’s 150 Years
Made in Canada. Together, the
duo have a combined age of
150 years and bring that same
humour (and wisdom) to listeners
from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m.

The air fryer is pushing
the deep fryer into the
deep end! Hot air (up
to 400°F) is circulated around
food at a high speed, using 70 to
80 percent less oil than its dated
cousin but achieving that same
desired crispiness. We’re talking
all the spoils, from chicken wings
to doughnuts!
