SHOHIN

Approach grafting procedure

Position of bark removal

This branch will be used

Node length is too long for
use with shohin

Outer bark of the donor branch is removed to ensure
a union between the stock tree and branch. Then the
position of the node on the donor tree is checked

The left and right side have the bark removed. The
donor branch is now ready. The bark is removed just
below the bud, so the node will be very close to the
trunk

The long section has a node length that is too
long to use for the tree in the future, so once it
has been successfully grafted, the long section
will be removed. New leaves and shoots will
only form at nodes, therefore it is essential for
shohin trees to make the node length as tight
as possible.

The final check for the angle and position of the graft:
It should be as close to a node on the donor branch as
possible, to prevent elongated growth

A small channel is cut into the tree to receive the
donor branch at the correct angle

The rough edges of the saw cut are cleaned up using
a knife so that the callusing and union will be smooth
and heal quickly

The depth and width of the channel should fit the
donor branch perfectly

The graft should be
as close to a node as
possible
