Someday in the future, your favorite gear and
gadgets may be made not from leather and plastic
but from plant cellulose and biosynthetic spider
silk. Finnish scientists and the Helsinki design firm
Aivan teamed up to create Korvaa, the world’s
first microbe-grown headphones. Their aim was
to show the possibilities of synthetic biology,
using fungi, yeast, 3-D printing and more to create
products. These headphones won’t be for
sale anytime soon but are on display at the
Fiskars Village Art & Design Biennale 2019 in
Finland through September.
