Our Best Retreat in
Home of the Year 2019 is
a cluster of monumental
buildings around
stunning views and
an expansive piazza.
Corten and schist relate
to the history of mining
in the area.
A holiday home for
trampers explores the
vernacular of DoC huts.
With a long, linear plan,
the house makes the
most of views and sun,
while the living area and
guest wing are divided
by a central covered deck.
Naish’s own house
was a finalist in our
Home of the Year 2011.
Its gable form mimic
surrounding houses,
while its crisp white
fibre-cement rainscreen
adds a contemporary
touch, with patterns
drawn from the fretwork
of neighbouring villas.
Naish’s family home
won Home of the Year
2015: three hipped roofs
reference villas in the
area. Built in the shape of
an ‘E’ around sheltered
courtyards, the broken
plan provides a growing
family with a variety of
spaces and experiences.
Richard Naish founded RTA
Studio two decades ago, an event
celebrated by ‘In Context’ – an
exhibition at Objectspace, until
September, and curated by the
University of Auckland’s Andrew
Barrie.Herearea fewkeyprojects.
