Getz/Gilberto, wherebyheandUS
saxophonist Stan Getz were backed

A keysellingpointwastheinclusion
of“TheGirlFromIpanema”,
sunginEnglishbyGilberto’swife
Astrud,withherhusbandduetting
inPortuguese.Issuedasa single,
minusJoão’svoice,it provedtobe
a hugeglobalhit,secondonlyto
TheBeatles’“Yesterday”whenit
comestothemostrecordedsongs
ofalltime.Getz/Gilbertowentonto
winthreeGrammys,thefirsttimea
jazzLPhadtriumphedintheAlbum
OfTheYearcategory.Gilberto
continuedtorecordata steadily
slowingrateoverthedecades,
reunitingwithhisAmericanfoilon
1966’sliveGetz/GilbertoVol 2 and
1976’sTheBestOfTwoWorlds, which
featuredhisnewwife,Miúcha.Their
daughter,BebelGilberto,is now
a popularartistinherownright.
João’slaststudioeffort,theCaetano
Veloso-producedJoãoVozE Violão,
earned him a Grammy in 2001.
