weekend photographing fall color in the Valley, only to hear
friends complain that fall had come early and the leaves
were almost gone. Undeterred, I made the drive and

some good leaves, but the pickings were slim.
“On the verge of giving up, I came across these trees.
Most of the leaves were gone, but there was color at the
top and, more importantly, a shaded valley wall in the
background. My hope was that as golden hour hit, I’d get
warm, golden leaves against cool blue granite.
“After an hour of waiting, everything came together.”
