A close-up
Read Sophie’s description of the rather
abstract close-up photo below and high-
light the adjectives she uses to describe
the different textures and lines in the pic-
ture. (Tip: the adjectives come in pairs.)

Can you see what it is? It’s a close-up of a
tree. I like the pattern made by the diffe-
rent textures of the surface. The rough-
er and smoother parts create lighter and
darker areas, depending on how the light
falls on them. You can see every small de-
tail of this tiny section of an enormous
tree. I like the soft curves. There are no
hard, straight lines. It looks as if all the
pieces had been carefully put together,
like a jigsaw.

Children and pets
Read Sophie’s description of this photo of
her baby niece and the family dog. High-
light the words and phrases she uses to
show how she created this image:

Here are Lotti and Lulu, my niece and
my dog. Aren’t they both adorable? This
was the first time they met. I set up the
situation by putting Lotti on the floor,
and then I let Lulu come near. I lay on
the floor to get the best angle. I was really
lucky: I caught exactly the right moment,
just as their eyes met. I took a whole load
of shots, to be honest, and this was the
best one. I love the different expressions
on their faces, which are both nicely in
focus. The original shot was a bit bigger,
even though I’d zoomed in, so I cropped
it down to focus on the faces of Lotti and
Lulu and the connection between them.
