Now, have another look at a sentence from “Show and tell”:
⋅ Police officers can carry CS gas, and they are^ allowed to^
carry a Taser.
Here are two ways to express the same idea: “you can do some-
thing”, and “you are allowed to do it”. Note that in English, you
start with the person (“you are allowed to”, “they are allowed
to”) not with “it” (es ist erlaubt).
