NETS2019-20SCHEDULE

By MARC BERMAN

Here are five takeaways
from the Knicks’ 2019-20
schedule, which was re-
leased Monday:

1

That the Knicks are on
ESPN and TNT a com-
bined three times, were
scratched from the Christ-
mas Day schedule and play a
road game on MLK Day is
indicative of James Dolan’s
franchise not being consid-
ered a glamor team.
Of their three national TV
appearances, the 17-65 club
of last season plays second
fiddle. Kristaps Porzingis’
return to the Garden as a
Maverick on Nov. 14 gets the
ESPN stage and TNT will
sell No. 1 pick Zion Wil-
liamson making his reg-
ular-season Garden de-
but as a Pelican on Jan. 10.
The third national game
(TNT) comes when the
Knicks cross the river to
Brooklyn to face Kyrie Ir-
ving’s Nets with Kevin Du-
rant watching from the
bench. The Knicks’ tradition
of playing MLK Day at the
Garden is postponed. In-
stead they are off to mori-
bund Cleveland in a non-na-
tional game on Jan. 20.

2

The Knicks’ first three
contests in four nights, in-
cluding their Oct. 26 home
opener versus Boston, each
contain interesting storylines.
The season opener Oct. 23 in
San Antonio has forward
Marcus Morris at The Alamo,
where Spurs fans will remind
him of the verbal agreement
he reneged on in July to sign
with the lowly Knicks.
Irving facing the Knicks

for the first time in his black
Brooklyn garb in the sea-
son’s second contest stands
to be terrific theatre at Bar-
clays Center on Oct. 25.
Then there are the Celtics,
as ex-Knicks center Enes
Kanter, whom coach David
Fizdale benched after the
season’s fifth game, makes
his Garden return.

3

Fizdale still loves his na-
tive Los Angeles, but he
may be in store for a bruising
in early January. The Knicks
do the rare Clippers-Lakers
exacta — two games in three

nights in LA against potential
juggernauts. The Clippers,
newly armed with Kawhi
Leonard and Paul George,
host the Knicks on Jan. 5 at
Staples Center and then the
visitors get Anthony Davis,
LeBron James and the Lakers
in the same arena Jan. 7. The
Lakers and Clippers make
their lone Garden visits
thereafter — Lakers on Jan.
22 and Clippers on March 23.

4

The Knicks will actually
face Porzingis first in Dal-
las on Nov. 8 before the Gar-
den rematch six days later.

The Knicks may get Porzin-
gis when he’s still rusty.
When they finally face the 7-
foot-3 Latvian, it would mark
21 months since he last played
— Feb. 6, 2018, at the Garden
when he tore his ACL.

5

The Knicks will meet the
Pelicans and Williamson
three times this season — in-
cluding an Oct. 18 Garden
exhibition. Williamson’s first
regular-season game at the
Garden is Jan. 10 as he goes
against his Duke buddy RJ
Barrett for real.

Can’t miss new-look Nets

By BRIAN LEWIS

Here are five takeaways from the Nets’ 2019-20
schedule, which was released Monday:

1

Arguably the biggest takeaway may just be that
the Nets have climbed up the NBA food chain
from invisible to must-see. They’ll be on national
TV 20 times: Six on ESPN, six more on TNT and
eight on NBA TV. They had just one national game
last year — on NBA TV — after being shut out al-
together the previous three seasons.

2

Kyrie Irving — whose stay with the Celtics
was highly scrutinized, and departure was
highly criticized — returns to Boston the night
before Thanksgiving. Celtics GM Danny Ainge
has gone out of his way to frame the All-Star point
guard as the villain in this story, and the Nov. 27
tilt will be the latest juicy chapter. Expect plenty
of boos.

3

Both of Brooklyn’s games against Golden
State are fairly late in the slate, which will
lend itself to plenty of speculation whether the

league thinks Kevin Durant might return this season. The
Nets host the Warriors — and former guard D’Angelo Rus-
sell, whom they dealt away for Durant — on Feb. 5, be-
fore going to San Francisco on March 12.
It’s worth noting the last five notable players to
rupture their Achilles took an average of 280 days
to come back. In the case of Durant — who rup-
tured his in Game 5 of the NBA Finals — that
would be March 18. Hmm ...

4

The Nets got shut out of Christmas Day for
the sixth straight year. The Nets open at
home versus Minnesota on Oct. 23 and host the
Knicks two days later. The Knicks play at Brook-
lyn on Dec. 26 at 8 p.m. on TNT, while the Nets
face Philadelphia in a playoff rematch on Martin
Luther King Day (Jan. 20), the league’s other mar-
quee date.

5

Even after Ringling Bros. went out of business, the
Nets have had some brutal road trips, including a
seven-game, 17-day trek in last year’s stretch run. But
next season the longest trip is a manageable nine-day,
five-game trip Nov. 8-16. They don’t have more than
nine road games in any month, also in November.

No respect

FALLING HARD:
The Knicks’ standing
in the league under
David Fizdale has
fallen off entering
another rebuilding year
as the Knicks weren’t
given a major stage for the
league’s big regular-
season dates.Bill Kostroun; AP
