Sevy, Dellin steps

away from return

By DAN MARTIN

Nearing the midpoint of
August, the Yankees haven’t
gotten a pitch from Luis Sev-
erino and Dellin Betances.
Both right-handers seem-
ingly inched closer to making
their season debuts with bull-
pen sessions that went well
Monday as they come back
from lat strains.
Severino said he threw 29
pitches in his second session,
including fastballs, sliders
and changeups, while Be-
tances had a 20-pitch session
that included 17 fastballs and
three breaking balls.
While each was encour-
aged by how he felt, Betances
said the biggest challenge
was his mindset since suffer-
ing the lat strain that side-
tracked his season.
“It’s more about trusting
that the area is gonna be
good,” Betances said before
the Yankees swept the Ori-
oles in a split doubleheader
Monday in The Bronx.
“I felt fine today, so I was
happy with that,” he added.
“This is the first time being
hurt in the big leagues. It’s

been frustrating, but the fun
part is about to start, so I’ll be
back for that.”
That’s the Yan-
kees’ plan, especially
after they didn’t add
an arm at the trade
deadline last month.
“That’s the confi-
dence they have in
me and [Severino],”
Betances said. “For
us, the biggest thing
is getting back. The
other guys put us
where we are right
now. It’s been fun to
watch, but we want
to be on the field
with them.”
Betances and Sev-
erino are expected
to throw bullpen
sessions again
Thursday, with Be-
tances going to 25
pitches. He added he
doesn’t expect to need to be
built up much more than that.
Severino’s situation figures
to be more complicated,
since he still anticipates join-
ing the rotation.
If Severino’s session goes
well Thursday, Aaron Boone

said he could face hitters in live
batting practice on Sunday.
The roster expan-
sion on Sept. 1 will
make it easier to
bring Severino along
gradually, and Boone
said he liked what he
saw Monday.
“I thought he
looked really good,”
the manager said.
“He continues to feel
strong. [He’s] fun to
watch throw. He’s
special.”
Severino hoped he
might be able to
pitch in a rehab or
simulated game — or
two — after the Yan-
kees leave for the
West Coast next
week, and he’s not
concerned about
having to come back
just as the team
heads into the playoff chase.
“Since I got here, every-
thing has been like that,” Sev-
erino said of the expecta-
tions. “If it’s a regular game
against Boston, it’s the same.
It’s gonna be like every year.”

Hurt Voit bides time,

feels ‘back to normal’

By DAN MARTIN AND
MOLLIE WALKER

Since going on the IL a little
less than two weeks ago with
a sports hernia, Luke Voit
says he “feels pretty much
back to normal” after work-
ing out and running sprints
prior to the Yankees’ double-
header sweep of the Orioles
on Monday.
There’s a possibility Voit
will need surgery in the off-
season, but he’s optimistic
about avoiding it right now.
However, there is still no
timeline for when Voit will
return to the lineup.
The first baseman said the
next step will be to hit on
Tuesday for the first time
while continuing to get back
into baseball shape.
“I think the hitting part will
be easy,” Voit said. “Obviously
my timing and everything
will be a big thing. Sprinting
was the biggest thing for me

and today it felt really good. I
got good work in last week
and everything is pointing in
the right direction.”
Aaron Boone said Voit
will likely get some rehab
games with Triple-A Scran-
ton/Wilkes-Barre if every-
thing goes well.

➤Aaron Hicks (elbow
flexor strain) was reevaluated
on Monday and is doing well,
according to Boone, but still
two weeks from throwing.
“[The strain] being close to
the UCL, we don’t want to
risk anything,” Boone said.
“The only thing holding me
back from baseball activities
is throwing,’’ Hicks said be-
fore being re-examined.

➤Gary Sanchez went hit-
less in the first game on Mon-

day and is 1-for-11 with five
strikeouts since his return
from the IL. ... Breyvic Va-
lera was called up from SWB
as the Yankees’ 26th man for
Monday’s doubleheader,
started both games at second
base and was optioned back
to SWB.

➤Cameron Maybin hom-
ered in the opener and an-
nounced on Twitter that his
mother, Nae Nae, “is offi-
cially in remission from her
breast cancer diagnosis.’’

➤Boone said Giancarlo
Stanton (right knee sprain)
could be back after his stay
on the 60-day IL ends.

➤CC Sabathia (right knee
inflammation) is scheduled
to throw a bullpen session on
Tuesday and if that goes well,
should start one of the games
against Cleveland, according
to Boone.

They’ll play April 28-30 at
Hiram Bithorn Stadium.
“Puerto Rico has a rich

the Mets, and Major
League Baseball.”
