standby lures. It has great action at really slow
retrieve rates and f lathead love it. The soft body
that folds easily adds to good hook exposure.
After I gave up trying to fix the electronics I
began casting to the clear patches. I was using a
small Zerek Fish Trap in black and purple. The
rod was a Loomis NR X, my favourite rod for
vibes and plastics. This type of graphite lets you
feel every miniscule tap. I hooked and landed a
50cm fish second cast, and that was Monday’s
food sorted out! The smallest Fish Trap in darker
colours has proved itself to be an excellent
f lathead catcher, I don’t think I’ve changed the
lure on this particular rod in 4 trips.
Mark, ever conservative in his lure choices, stuck
with a 3 inch white curl tailed Gulp swimming
mullet on a pink powder coated jig head, and he
soon caught another reasonable fish. This lure,
known locally as the “Gumby Grub” is ever reliable
and is the weapon of choice for the totally inept and
unskilled angler as well as more experienced
fishermen. Anyone can catch a f lathead on this
lure. To a f lathead it equates to a slightly stale
cheese and pickles sandwich on white bread, the
kind you find in a service station at midnight. They
all will eat it but in truth it is actually a fairly boring
dull choice in lure selection. But without a doubt it
is very effective for catching f lathead. It just lacks
class and refinement, the same way a Bunnings
sausage on bread does.
Ten minutes later the hyper critical Connor,
constantly complaining about mechanical and
